Intended results Follow up to meeting with Exporters to discuss action points and issues requiring attention. Propose that Ireland should target a doubling of live export numbers in 2019. Maximising the export of calves over the next number of months is an absolute priority. Improve Ferry Facilities Improve Lairage Facilities - In order to maximise calf exports, exporters expressed the view it is essential that there are adequate lairage facilities for the volume of Irish calves in the peak March/April/May sales period. Proposed changes to the EU regulations requiring that the assembly period for live exports to be reduced from 29 days to only 14 days - Strong view is that this would be very damaging and severely restrict the live export trade. Under no circumstances should the Government and the DAFM allow the EU Commission to implement a piece of legislation which will severely damage the live trade and Irish access to the EU single market for live animals. The DAFM would facilitate transport to the Turkish market by truck and road network, in line with the options open to other EU countries and of course operating to the highest animal health and welfare standards, taking account of the high temperatures in mid-summer. A request was made that the DAFM would travel to Algeria to progress discussions on an export certificate with the authorities there. To continue the progress in improving our animal health status in order to be able to access the maximum number of live export market outlets. DAFM must provide the necessary support to farmers who have invested heavily in acquiring our current high health status in recognition of the broader benefits associated with market access. To ensure full stakeholder engagement to increase the ferry and lairage capacity for live exports, especially calves. To secure full Ministerial and diplomatic initiative to get the international live export trade operating at capacity. To resist EU proposals to impose a 30 day pre-movement TB test and tighter assembly periods for live exports
