Specific Details The need to protect and enrich the organic matter in Irish soils. The absence of earth worms in soil because of mismanagement of current farming practices. The impact on farming due to increasing prices for imported phosphorus based fertilisers over the coming 4 to 6 decades. The need for Ireland to recycle phosphorus in order to avoid economic difficulties on farms that rely on the use of mineral and synthetic fertilisers.

Intended results To change the focus of waste water treatment to more effectively recycle nitrogen and phosphorus from municipal waste water without any toxic metals, organic pollutants or residual pharmaceuticals. To ensure that Ireland becomes more independent in its use of fertilisers that are free of toxic metals and organic pollutants.

Irish intensive agriculture is un sustainable in the long run if we continue to farm in a way that depletes the organic matter in soils and if we remain as dependent as we are at present on the importation of mineral phosphorus that has increasingly high levels of cadmium. We must reduce the application on farm land of municipal sewage sludge that contains organic pollutants and the use of mineral phosphorus that also has unacceptable high levels of metals such as cadmium. Ireland must therefore develop its own toxic free source of source of nature based fertilisers as well as its own supply of toxic free recycled phosphorus and nitrogen from waste water.
